In what order to learn Italian?

I found learning vocab first then reading complex books was very effective, but i'd done lots of latin before. If you're starting with your first romance language (no pun intended) then you need to get to grips first with personal endings, declensions and short common words. The grammar definitely comes subliminally unlike German.
