Corrie: why is john so stupid?

I am sick of this storyline now. I can not understand why he lied about being a delivery driver to Mrs Fishwicks neighbour. Why did he not just say that he was a friend of her son's and he had come to see how she was. It is dragging on too long now and too be honest it was boring to start with
